Formulas used

Energy method: Fuel mass rate (kg/h) = electrical output (kW) ÷ [electrical efficiency × heating value (kWh/kg)]. Liquid volume (L/h) = mass rate ÷ density (kg/L).

Runtime: Hours = available liquid propane (gal) ÷ fuel consumption (gal/h). Cost: Price per unit × fuel volume or mass, plus operating charges.

Combustion: C₃H₈ + 5O₂ → 3CO₂ + 4H₂O. Every kilogram of completely combusted pure propane produces about 2.99 kg of CO₂.

Air demand: Propane requires about 15.67 kg of theoretical air per kg of fuel, assuming 23.2% oxygen by air mass. Excess air increases combustion air demand.

Understanding propane generator consumption

What this calculator measures

Propane generators convert stored chemical energy into usable electrical power. Consumption changes with electrical demand, engine design, maintenance, and operating conditions. This calculator estimates fuel requirements using efficiency or manufacturer measurements.

How to estimate hourly fuel use

Enter generator capacity, actual loading, and the relevant efficiency. Then choose propane properties matching your supplied fuel. Lower heating value commonly matches published engine efficiency specifications. Never combine efficiency definitions using different heating value bases. The tool converts chemical input into hourly propane consumption.

Tank runtime and operating cost

Select your tank and enter the available starting fuel. Keep sufficient reserves for unpredictable loads and emergencies. Cylinders contain propane measured by weight, not water gallons. Larger stationary tanks often have nominal water capacity ratings. Enter an available withdrawal limit when your supplier provides one. Electricity costs reflect fuel, maintenance, and selected recurring charges.

Reading the load comparison

Generator fuel economy rarely remains constant across all loads. Manufacturer curves better represent idle and part-load consumption behavior. Compare low, moderate, and full-load operation before scheduling equipment. Running watts determine ordinary demand, while starting watts affect capacity. Avoid loading beyond the generator's available continuous rating.

Safety and engineering limitations

Propane equipment requires suitable regulators, piping, ventilation, and installation. Fuel leaks create serious fire, explosion, and asphyxiation hazards. Operating generators indoors creates potentially fatal carbon monoxide exposure. Follow local codes and certified equipment manufacturer instructions. Carbon dioxide calculations describe ideal combustion chemistry only. Calculated results are estimates rather than a final installation design. Confirm storage, vaporization, and fuel delivery with qualified professionals. Review measured generator data before making major purchasing decisions.

For extended outages, test realistic load schedules and document fuel deliveries. Recalculate after changing appliances, generator settings, current propane prices, or available tank inventory.

Frequently asked questions

How much propane does a 10 kW generator consume?

Consumption depends on electrical load and efficiency. Enter manufacturer fuel data for a realistic prediction.

How long will a 20 lb propane cylinder last?

Runtime equals available cylinder propane divided by hourly fuel use. Reserve fuel and vaporization limits can shorten operation.

How long will a 500 gallon propane tank last?

Tank runtime depends on its actual available propane, starting fill percentage, fuel draw, and minimum reserve.

Does a generator burn less propane at half load?

Usually yes, but gallons per kWh can increase as electrical efficiency falls at lighter loads.

Can propane run a generator during freezing weather?

Yes, but cold tanks may not vaporize propane quickly enough. Consult your supplier and equipment specifications.

What is the difference between rated tank size and water capacity?

An ASME tank labeled 500 gallons commonly describes water capacity. Its allowable liquid propane fill is lower.

Are generator startup surges included?

An appliance surge check compares peak starting demand against the generator’s available rating.

Are calculated emissions exact?

No. Carbon dioxide values are ideal combustion estimates, excluding upstream emissions and incomplete combustion.

Which heating value should be selected?

LHV is customary for many engine efficiency calculations. Use HHV only with an efficiency specified on that basis.

Can these estimates size gas piping or regulators?

No. Piping and regulator design need manufacturer requirements, local codes, pressure drop, and vaporization analysis.
